Fall Prevention for People Over 65

1/3 of people over the age of 65 fall each year... many things can cause falls such as weakness of muscles, vision problems, medication, medical conditions, home hazards such as rugs, steps, poor lighting, etc.

If an older adult is only going to do one thing to reduce their risk of a fall, it should be exercise - taking their medical and physical history into consideration. It may be best to be screened by a physical therapist and have them prescribe an exercise program or have your doctor prescribe outpatient physical therapy.

Installing grab bars, more lighting, removing rugs, installing a high toilet or a high toilet seat, sitting on the edge of the bed for 12 seconds before standing is also helpful.

If you take anti-coagulant medication you need to be especially careful not to fall.

You are more likely to fall if you take four or more medications, have foot problems, get dizzy, have problems seeing, or have trouble walking and getting around.

San Diego County has a wonderful video about fall reduction, called "Don't Fall for It". Click here to watch it
